Back to discovery writing - What to do about word count
  • MJBrudenellMJBrudenell November 2011
Well, in retrospect I think my last minute decision to do NaNo this year was a little too last minute.  I made the decision on Oct 28th, and signed up that day.  The story I am working on was still deep in discovery, but I figured I am writing crap anyways, so what's the big deal.  I got about 1300 words into the manuscript when I realized that I wouldn't be able to pants my way through, and I needed to regroup and get back to plotting.  So now on the last day of the month I wonder what I should do about validating my word count.  Do I validate the 1300 words of actual story, or do I add into that the words completed on character sheets, scene outlines and plot synopsis?  Any takers?

I say that if your NaNo was spent working on your discovery story then it was a NaNo well spent and you should go for validating it! That's what I did last year and, yeah, I kind of felt like a cheater, but it was still work (and hard work at that) for the entire month so why the heck not?

Thanks Molly.  It won't equal 50,000, but whatever.  It's the story that counts, not the word count.

I will validate.  Finish what you start.
