DISCOVERING YOUR NOVEL
The first stage in novel writing is the discovery process, and it is often ignored. You need to plan things that get jettisoned, write scenes that get cut, and rework character and voice to find not only what your book is, but what your process is for this book. This is called discovery, and by allowing yourself this time to really get a hold on your novel without the pressure of having to produce x-number of words or pages in set period of time, your goal is to be able to go into your novel knowing exactly what you want to do, and exactly how you want to get there.
How it works:
When class starts, your StoryWonk forums login will get you access to a private board accessible only to members of the class. I will be active on the board for any questions and discussions for the length of the class.
During the weekly online class, I’ll be lecturing live and answering questions you put into the live chat. If you cannot make the live online class, the class will be recorded for you to view at your convenience.
In the private forum board, we will discuss that week’s assignment and share exercises that will help you set your goal for the book, find the voice of the book, get to know your protagonist, and figure out your process. Assignments will include but not be limited to – making collages, building soundtracks, watching movies, reading books and completing exercises that will not necessarily be used in the book. This is about preparation – the actual writing of the book comes later.
Come to class with:
